I once described Briony like this:
She lives life as if she's constantly being followed by hidden cameras, auditioning for Glee.
I don't think I've ever spoken truer words. This kid cracks us up CONSTANTLY.
Today at breakfast (following our family's 'goatmeal dance party' - eating oatmeal and dancing to Michael Jackson and other 90s goodness), she perfected her 'fake surprised' look when Geoff said something, complete with a super dramatic double take + wide eyes + hands over her mouth. AMAZING.

Let's call this Reason #4593 why we are making the right decision in not having any more babies.
Briony is the QUEEN of innocent. She's a really good kid, but she's TWO and we have near-daily random situations happen where she'll drop food off the edge of her high chair onto the floor, colour on the table instead of her paper, or make a huge mess with her toys, and then come find us with her blue eyes opened as wide as they'll go and say, 'Oh NO! What happened?!'
Can you IMAGINE what she'd blame on a younger sibling? And GET AWAY WITH?? :)

REINDEER = RAINBOW DEER in our house this holiday season.
She's started correcting herself, which breaks my heart because 'wainbow deer' is pretty much the cutest thing ever ever ever.

Yesterday, I was trying to make dinner and Briony kept bringing me her little animal puppets from the living room. She came cruising in with a little shark puppet on her finger and said, 'Look Mama! It's a SARK!'
I pretended to be scared and she looked at me with total disdain. 'Mama... IT'S NOT REAL.'
Thanks for clearing that up.

Briony loves Hello Kitty. I won't lie... It's one of her interests that we encourage a little just because Geoff + I happen to like Hello Kitty stuff vs most other things for little girls.
But Hello Kitty has been discussed A LOT in our house lately - and now Briony will occasionally refer to her stuffed animals as 'Hello Turtle' or 'Hello Giraffe' or 'Hello Squirrel'... You get the picture.
It's kind of hilarious and kind of impossible to explain to her.

Oh, Briony... One thing I hope we'll remember when you're all grown up and super embarrassed about this kind of thing is the fact that you were hilarious when you slept.
I'm honestly terrified to ever move her to a big girl bed because she practices some serious tai chi in her sleep. When Geoff and I check on her after she's asleep, we sometimes can't contain our laughter over the uncomfortable positions we find her in... And she is ALL over the place. We used to wonder what her dreams were about, but now that she's acquired the vocabulary to be able to tell us about it in the morning, we know that she's spent the night swimming with dolphins... hehe.
It makes me smile because - after housing her inside of me for nine (almost ten) months - those movements are as familiar to me as breathing and it's really no surprise at all :)

Oh, the imagination we get to enjoy over here...
In the last couple of days, we've been treated to:
- A two year old who told me all about her 'adventure' when she went 'swimming with dolphins underwater' and also 'saw a shark'
- A two year old who sometimes pretends to be a puppy
- A two year old who today pretended to be a dinosaur
- A two year old who bit the straw of her sippy cup in between her teeth, swung the bottle back and forth, and declared that she was an elephant
- A two year old who stood up in her crib in the middle of the night and yelled - repeatedly - 'Briony wants COFFEE!'
This is all normal behaviour, right? :)

One Moment With Briony
Last night, I had one of those mommy moments that is difficult to put into words.
When Geoff, Emily, Paul, and I got back to our place after dinner yesterday, Briony wasn't quite sleeping. Her sixth sense kicked in and she started fussing the second I was swapped in for Grandma + Grandpa.
I went upstairs and scooped her up out of her crib, and we sat down together in the rocking chair in her room. She immediately cuddled up against me and made one of those super awesome completely-content-and-falling-asleep baby noises, patting me with her hand as she nodded off.
I couldn't move.
Rather, I didn't want to move.
We sat and rocked for a long, long time - Briony sleeping and Mama soaking in every single moment because I am painfully aware that my baby is not really a baby anymore. I just sat there looking down at her eyelashes and smelling her hair and listening to her breathe.
It was one of those moments that was extraordinary in its ordinary-ness, that you know you'll remember forever.

The scene at our house after dinner this evening... This is *so* Briony at almost two years old :)
You know what? Sometimes I really miss having super fabulous weekend plans - or just being able to come home from work on a Friday and spend the next couple of hours reading a book in a bubble bath. But I would not miss having this in my life right now for ANYTHING.
And this is exactly why I need to go to the Mayo Clinic. This little bundle of awesomeness deserves to have the best mom in the world.

Today, Briony was playing in her little kitchen upstairs and was having a ball with her little Starbucks sample cup (no explanation required). She was offering us coffee when, suddenly, you could see a light bulb come on in her head.
In our house, effective immediately, Briony insists that people COUGH when sipping COFFEE. Get it? Oh, the mind of an almost two year old...

Just overheard Chez Wright...
Geoff + Briony are checking out the freshly-signed birthday card he'll be delivering to his brother Kevin later tonight. It's one of those 'Top 10 Reasons I'm Glad You're My Brother' type cards, and he was asking her to point out different numbers and pictures before focusing in on the signatures we've added inside.
Geoff: Where's Briony?
Briony looks confused.
Geoff (pointing to where we've signed her name): Right here.
Briony looks positively wounded.
Briony: No, Dada. Briony is here (points at her chest). INSIDE HERE.

After dinner tonight, I was sitting on the couch and Briony was playing in the living room. I looked at her and it was just one of those moments that kind of takes your breath away, where you look at your child and think 'oh WOW, she's awesome' and I couldn't help myself... I leaned down and kissed her on the forehead. She looked up at me with her beautiful blue eyes and said, 'Mama, I am VERY CUTE.'
Sigh.
This will be the root of all our problems :)

Another cool little milestone today... I'm in the office, and Geoff called to let me know that Briony was up from her nap and that they were leaving soon to pick me up. Except that Geoff didn't tell me all of that - Briony helped too. I answered my phone and said hello and was treated to a chattering nonstop commentary THAT I ACTUALLY UNDERSTOOD. Briony told me she was finished her nap and also told me all about the book she was looking at about bears. Crazy stuff from my one year old. Gosh, I love her :)

Today brought a couple of major milestones...
Briony's first attempt at walking on tiptoe. SO CUTE. She's kind of awesome at it already!
Briony's first successful independent singing of 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star' - she sang the entire song a couple of times today. Might be my new favourite thing of hers, though I'm rather partial to the 'I Love...' songs that we're still hearing regularly around here (especially when the sings about loving mama... and sometimes when she sings about loving baby ducks :)
Briony's first traumatic rash. When I first laid eyes on her after work today, I PANICKED. It looked like measles. Some quick internet research and a call to our pediatrician confirmed that it's something called
exanthema subitum - which actually completely explains her weird scary fever earlier this week. The rash is nasty-looking but not contagious or uncomfortable to her at all. I'm already dreading leaving the house with her this week and needing to explain to a hundred anxious mommy strangers that she doesn't have leprosy. SIGH. We might be staying home for a little while.

Briony has been experimenting with SO MANY SENTENCES lately. She's been speaking with sentences for a while now, but they're getting longer and she's trying new things all the time. Sometimes the words don't *quite* come out in the traditional order...
