Information Seeking
So it's almost time for us to choose an OB/GYN for this pregnancy, and the hospital where we'd like to deliver - the first of probably fifteen thousand million decisions we'll get to make in the next couple of months. And things that I know nothing about.Anyone have a great experience with a great doctor at a great hospital? Or ideas of good questions to ask in order to find a good fit? I'm taking notes... We'll make our own decision in the end, but I'd love to hear lots of different opinions to help start us off with our research.

I think it's important to know what kind of birth you would like.
Drugs, no drugs, don't care either way. Natural (as in vaginal - sorry I had to use the v word) or if it doesn't matter to you if it winds up being a c-section. Do you care if you're induced (if you're overdue) or not?
It's not to say what you wish for will even come close to what you go through, but at least you want someone who is on the same page as you.
All that to say that I thought I knew what I wanted and having gone through the results of those decisions I'm not sure I'd have made the same choices - even though I loved my doc.
And don't forget (not that you would) ... you can always got the midwife route.
Don't know if that helps, but all things to consider when making your decision.
Sorry, I gave birth before hospitals were invented.
Yes, HELP! I have NO IDEA where to start with all of that stuff..... :( eeck.
I've heard good things about Raina Best. Of course, I'd also heard good things about Dr. Collister, and upon meeting him decided I would never use him (should I decide to do this again). I wasn't overly fond of my own - Dr. Seager, but I suppose I was a rather normal pregnancy type and when all you do is deliver babies for a living, you don't worry about the things that the pregnant woman worries about. Oh, and my 30 minutes or so with Dr. Sabeski who did the C-section were good. I would consider switching to her (again, if I should ever do this again).
As for place of delivery, my fondest memories are at the vic. but that's no longer an option (i'm still bitter).
The best OB/GYN in Winnipeg(hands down).....ask any nurses...is Dr.McCarthy...office is in 400 Tache right across from St. Boniface hospital, which in my opinion is the best place to give birth. He is an older Irish guy and his bed side manner is kinda odd. His shirt is always untucked and he is always really busy. But...if you can past that.....he is a brilliant doctor and has a heart of gold!! Other than a midwife I would not want anybody else delivering my babies:)(he did 2 of 3)
I can vouch for Dr. McCarthy as well having worked with him in the past:) Wasn't sure he was still working!
It seems that you are open to natural therapy... you should seriously think about having your child with a midwife. Midwives spend twice as much time, if not more, with you during your pre-natal meetings and develop a relationship with you. Each midwife has a caseload of no more than 40 births per YEAR. Doctors, no matter how kind they are, do not have enough time to answer all the questions a first-time mom has.

was gonna say that my obgyn has retired too since delivery ALL the original Laings and then my eldest... i CAN say that i had one birth drugged up and one birth natural and i prefered the natural one.
Hmmm... It would appear that we have some mild advertising going on here :)
Just because it's been mentioned a couple of times already:
I'm definitely open to the idea of using a midwife or a doula, but within the context of having an extra support person who approaches the situation holistically. I would still want to be in a hospital, and I would still want an OB/GYN involved - just because I'm not totally healthy, and no one will know until we're in the middle of it if my body is even capable of natural childbirth.
I've had enough medical surprises in my lifetime. I want to make sure this baby is healthy, and I won't take any chances with that.
The first questions we asked were if they would actually be the one to deliver our baby. we heard many horror stories of going in to labour and the obgyn that you spent the last nine months becoming comfortable with was not on duty. our doctor was willing to come in, on his nights off to deliver his patients, which was a huge comfort. and, he did show up! it was such a relief and a comfort to see him walking through my birthday room door. he also never ruled out any of the options that I wanted...the option to have an epidural vs natural, being induced if I became too uncomfortable (after my due date obviously) and having the people I wanted in the birthing room with me, (my husband, my mom and my mother in law were all able to stay during the course of labour and delivery) those were things that were important to us....
I had my kids in the dark ages I guess....there weren't any options! Good luck in all your decision making Lins! (oops, that's two exclamation marks)
Yeah - I called the Winkler Clinic and said I needed one and they gave me one. VERY scientific. But I like her so it's all good. And she doesn't like winter weather, so she's already taken her vacation for the year. :)
Dr. McCarthy delivered my sister's first baby (emergency) and was very impressive. We were told by one of the nurses there that we were very lucky that he was on call because he was hands-down the best ob/gyn in Manitoba and one of the best in Canada.
With Ella I had a midwife at St. Boniface and it was great. Having a midwife there to give me all the attention I needed, while still having all the medical staff on call was a relief. I actually met Dr. McCarthy on my way out of the hospital in the elevator and my midwife introduced us and said he was the best! So I guess it's true after all I've read here. He seems to have made a name for himself.
i think i should have another baby so i can meet the famous dr mccarthy!
I did St.B with Dr. Boroditsky (funny jewish doctor). He's in the same office with Raina Best (Cara and Danae Hiebert have Raina). I loved my guy. Only thing is they are on rotation and whoever is on shift delivers you. To me this made no difference. All they do is catch and stitch!! LOL! I had a SUPERB labour nurse, a EQUALLY SUPERB & HOT husband, and an EXCELLENT doula. Wouldn't change a thing. Boroditsky and Dr. Best are in Boyd medical center on Portage and Edmonton. Happy decision making.
Mel
Hey Lindsay...
I'm going with Dr. Raina Best (as Mel mentioned)... she is super sweet and easy to talk to. (I came to my appointment with a written list of questions and she thought that was great and answered them all without making me feel silly)... the only thing is that the chance of having her at the delivery is 1/6 because they rotate between 6 Drs in their practice (and Dr. Borditsky is no longer in the practice). But I've heard good stuff about most of the obgyn's there. Good luck choosing! (and like Mel said, Dr. Best is in Boyd medical centre on portage) and delivers out of St.B.
