Stupid Mommy Question

It's no secret that I didn't spend a lot of time around babies until we had one. I constantly find myself wondering about things that are probably no big deal - or maybe just common sense for a SuperMom. But I refuse to be shy about asking :)

We're in the process of slowly subbing out some bottles of formula with milk. SLOWLY would be the operative word... So far, she's really only tasted the milk and it hasn't replaced anything. I'm in no rush, especially with Christmas craziness just around the corner. She's doing so great on the formula that there's really no need to push anything.

But I have unanswered questions about what happens when we DO switch her mostly or totally over. I need to know how to manage being out all day with her when she's off formula. How do you pack milk and keep it at a safe temperature? Or do you keep formula on hand for situations like this? Or do you just do water + snacks and not worry about it for that day?

I want a baby manual. Seriously.

Trinity was/is a milk fanatic so when we switched her at first I would pack bottles of milk in a thermal case with an ice pack. Later, when she would take a straw or sippy cup, I got the thermos ones that actually keep things cold. They really do. I still use them for lunches for the kids and the milk is still cold at lunchtime.

Okay, that's really good to know. I was holding the Thermos sippy cup in my hands at the store yesterday and wondering if the money was worth it. I think we'll pick it up this week. A perfect stocking stuffer :)

I usually would do the same thing, use the thermos sippy cup... sometimes I throw 1 or 2 ice cubes in it if it's going to be a few hours till he drinks it. But now that he's older I usually just pack water if we are out during the day and make sure he gets his milk when he wakes up and before he goes to bed.

Once James was totally on milk, I didn't stress out if on the rare occasion that we were out he would just get whatever milk I could get at a food vendor, gas station, or someone else's house. So if he happened to get 1% or 2% versus the usual homo, I didn't get too worked up about it. It's all the same - just less fat content. In winter it's a little easier to bring milk along - it won't INSTANTLY go sour. I wouldn't see why you couldn't still give her formula in those instances, or if you are really desperate, milk powder. And that is not a dumb question - I will likely be trying to remember what I did too, in a few months.

I actually switched Harper over to milk about 2 wks ago...Did it "cold turkey" which maybe is not the best, but she is doing great on it. She doesn't get a sippy cup of milk until her afternoon nap and when we do go out...(which is usually never!!) I bought her own little Sig bottle that holds enough milk for the day. Other than that..it's usually just water that she drinks during the rest of the day. She does eat cereal with milk for breakfast and her afternoon snack is usually a frozen yogurt tube.

Usually Carter has water when we go out but on the odd occasion he brings milk I usually pack it in one of those Playtex insulated sippy cups.

Yay! Thanks, everyone. Apparently, the question wasn't as stupid as I thought it was :)

Scarlett has never been crazy about milk, for whatever reason. Give the kid a cup full of water and it's gone. Milk? Depends (though I have noticed that sometimes if she's not crazy about what's for supper she drinks a LOT of milk - kind of makes the old adage about "kids won't starve themselves" true!).

We're on a strict "milk with meals, water all the rest of the day" type of plan.

Otherwise - I almost always just give her water when we're out and about - like mall runs, etc. I can't be bothered trying to keep milk cold, especially for the little bit she drinks. And when we're at someone else's place, I just give her whatever they have. In fact, I haven't bought homo milk in forever. She just doesn't drink enough of it to be worth it so she just drinks what the rest of us drink.
