Things No One Warned Me About: Old People

Yesterday morning at church, a sweet and well-meaning old lady came to make a big fuss over how beautiful Briony was... And then proceeded to ask me if I was expecting again. I'm not going to get over that one any time soon.

I love that. Some people are so dense. I remember being so polite to everyone but then one day ripping off some stranger's head when they asked if Malakai was a boy or girl. I said something to the effect that since he was wearing all blue and had blue blankets that it would make sense that he was a boy. Opps! I couldn't help myself.

I apologize for that old lady.I'm sorry I'm an older woman making me one of that kind?I hope not!!Maybe being old wasn't the issue---maybe its more ignorance and thoughtlessness.I pray age will make me a better person, and more considerate.Maybe she just didn't know how to be friendly and sspoke without thinking.Forgive her! Love you.

I can't even tell you how many people I know have been asked that question after having a baby. I'm due with my first child this Thursday actually, and am expecting this question at some point following the birth. I think that people should really smarten up. To ask that of someone who isn't with a young child is bad enough, never mind asking someone with a baby. Her words can only be explained as a lack of common sense. Just know that you are no different than any other new mother.

I know this will sound crazy, but try not to take it too personally -I am living in an "old" people's world these days - and yes, they say things that are not nice, inconsiderate and may seem stupid but they are not saying those things to be any of those things. I say to all your blogger friends, please don't judge them as such - they don't say things to hurt you. When we are 80+ years old, let's hope we have the ability to guard our tongues and only say the "right" things, but don't count on it - the filters do not always work. It hurts me terribly when I hear "young" people calling "old" people names or stereotyping them. Let's just be glad that the "old" person still took the time and had the ability to speak to a "young" person.

Oh, it's nothing against 'old people' - it could have been anyone, and I'd still be feeling this way. In this case, it just happened to be someone elderly. In Geoff's church, probably 98% of the people there have white hair, and I think that ALL ten thousand of them came to admire the baby, so statistically speaking - they were largely friendly (and inoffensive).

:)

Did you ask her if she had her babies 9 months apart?:) Sounds like she was a 'maternal' person who believes in 'multiplying and filling the earth'.
